She Hoops Teams Up with Sunshine Coast Sports Community to Empower Girls in Basketball
In an exciting collaboration, She Hoops, Sunshine Coast Rip City Basketball, NBL1 and Sunshine Coast Grammar School have come together to host a series of basketball clinics aimed at empowering and inspiring the next generation of female basketball players.
These clinics, sponsored by Blackmores, will be held on Friday, August 16, as part of She Hoops’ commitment to driving participation and excellence in women’s and girls’ basketball on the Sunshine Coast.
She Hoops is an initiative dedicated to creating opportunities for women and girls in all areas of basketball, from grassroots participation to elite pathways, including players, coaches, officials, and administrators.
This visionary program was launched by Lauren Jackson, one of the greatest female basketball players of all time, who has just finished her fifth Olympic campaign with the Australian Opals in Paris.
By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, She Hoops aims to build confidence, community, and a lifelong love of the game. Through partnerships with local clubs, schools, and organizations, She Hoops is leading the charge in breaking down barriers and encouraging more girls to engage in basketball.
Steph Reid, one of Australia’s top point guards and a great example of persistence and determination, will lead these clinics.
Reid played a pivotal role in Townsville Fire’s 2022 WNBL championship win before making her Opals debut earlier this year in Brazil at the age of 28. She is now set to join European powerhouse Sopron Basket.
Before embarking on this next chapter in her career, Reid brings her expertise and passion to inspire girls of the Sunshine Coast.
Clinic Details:
- First Session: 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM for girls aged 12-15
- Second Session: 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM for girls aged 8-11
During an overlapping Q&A session, participants will have the opportunity to engage directly with Steph Reid, gaining valuable insights into her journey and the skills needed to succeed at the highest levels of the sport.
A Collaborative Effort for Girls’ Sports
The success of this event is a testament to the power of collaboration within the Sunshine Coast sports community.
Sunshine Coast Grammar’s basketball program, known for its dual focus on elite pathways and participation, particularly emphasises opportunities for girls. Working together with She Hoops and Rip City, Grammar has helped ensure that programs like this clinic are available to young athletes across the region.
“We are thrilled to see the collaboration between She Hoops and Rip City, and our basketball program at Grammar,” said Jarryd Archer, Teacher in charge of basketball.
“This partnership demonstrates the incredible potential of working together to create opportunities for girls in sport on the Sunshine Coast, driven by our elite athletes and their commitment to fostering a strong culture.”
Driving Participation and Pathways
Rip City, the only provider of Aussie Hoops on the Sunshine Coast and a proud partner of She Hoops, views these initiatives as crucial to strengthening programs at both the club and association levels.
“Affiliations with She Hoops programs and sponsors like Blackmores are essential in driving the next generation of sportspeople here on the coast towards our Olympic stage in 2032,” said Jason Brooks, President of Rip City Basketball. “We look forward to more events like this and expanding our relationships with school sports in the near future.”
By bringing together She Hoops, Rip City, and Sunshine Coast Grammar, this event not only showcases the power of community collaboration but also underscores the shared commitment to nurturing the growth and development of girls in basketball.
She Hoops’ mission is to ensure that every girl has the opportunity to play, grow, and excel in basketball, regardless of her starting point, and this event is a key step toward realising that vision.
Limited spots are available for these free clinics, so early registration is encouraged. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to be part of the She Hoops movement and the energy surrounding the NBL1 Finals Series.
